She never cared for the crown

One day in January the Australian skies were blue, the warm summer breeze was drifting inland off Port Philip Bay and I was strolling the streets with my camera in tow. Not chasing anything in particular, rather remaining patient for a moment or scene to reveal itself.

A warm gust of wind swept through, rustling the leaves of the plain trees above while walking along the footpath of a quiet street. I turned left at the corner and there she was. She stood side on, glancing back over her right raised shoulder. Her long straight black hair was tight but wavy ontop with a crown braid. A popped collar with short sleeves revealing her tattoo detail of a woman with a dreamy gaze.

Lips painted black yet remaining mysterious. Her right eyebrow raised slightly, with blue tears rolling down her cheek. She is a warrior, empowered with courage, expanded awareness, inner strength and willpower. The look in her eyes outlined a different feeling, a feeling of deep pain and hurt while stealing a look one last time. Her name is Shinoya and I stood in awe.

This scene strongly reminded me of the words I once read on instagram — “She never cared for the crown. She preferred a sword” written by R. H. Sin.

The artwork is titled ‘Shinoya’ and is by street artist Fin DAC who describes himself as painter of urban aesthetics. Have a look at his work, it really is beautiful!

I took this photograph (above) on 30th January 2022 for my personal project RAW365. A project where one photograph (or more) taken per day with all techniques captured in camera. The photograph is then posted in its raw state with no filters, no editing, no post processing. The camera used is either a DSLR / SLR / Medium Format.

Why RAW365? This is a great question. In a world where we’re saturated with imagery of all kinds and have an abundance of options to process anything in a digital format, I wanted to go back to the roots of where my photography started with light, shadow, form, composition, texture, depth, and capture these moments/scenes in their raw state. Quotes, thoughts and written word will accompany the photographs.

The project started on 2nd Janurary 2022. At the time of writing I am up to post number #99. Since posting everyday I’ve noticed the process of uploading each to Instagram is fine. However, uploading to website which is running on Squarespace is a little more cumbersome. I’m currently looking at other alternatives to post to such as Tumblr, yes remember Tumblr! If anyone has any other ideas/suggestions on this please let me know in the comments.

Thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments if you enjoyed reading this short story. I’ll be writing more short stories on scenes I’ve photographed and articles on other creative pursuits. If there are any questions, or anything else you’d like to know, please don’t hesitate to comment or get in touch.
